How to Reduce Stress During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one of the most beautiful journeys in a woman’s life. But let’s be honest—it can also be a little overwhelming. Between the physical changes, hormonal shifts, and the advice pouring in from every auntie and neighbour, it is completely normal to feel stressed.

At Ferty9 Fertility Centre, we believe that a happy mother builds a healthy baby. Stress doesn’t just affect your mood; it can impact your baby’s development too. The good news is that reducing stress doesn’t require expensive retreats. You can find peace right at home with simple, traditional Indian practices.

Here are 7 proven ways to manage stress and enjoy a calm, happy pregnancy.

1. Embrace the Power of Garbh Sanskar

In Indian culture, we have always believed that bonding with the baby starts long before birth. This ancient wisdom is called Garbh Sanskar. It is the practice of creating a positive environment for the unborn baby.

  • Talk to your baby: Spend 10 minutes daily rubbing your belly and talking to your little one.
  • Listen to calming music: Whether it is soft instrumental flute music, classical ragas, or soothing mantras like Om Chanting or Gayatri Mantra, sound therapy relaxes both you and the baby.
  • Positive reading: Read stories with good morals or spiritual books that make you feel uplifted.

2. Practice Prenatal Yoga and Breathing

Exercise releases “happy hormones” called endorphins. You don’t need a gym membership; simple prenatal yoga is excellent for Indian women to stay flexible and calm.

  • Butterfly Pose (Baddha Konasana): Helps open up the hips and relieves tension in the lower back.
  • Cat-Cow Pose (Marjariasana): Great for spine flexibility and releasing back stress.
  • Breathing Exercises (Pranayama): Try Anulom Vilom (Alternate Nostril Breathing) or Bhramari (Humming Bee Breath). These are powerful tools to instantly calm an anxious mind.

Note: Always consult your gynaecologist before starting any new exercise routine.

3. Follow a Sattvic Diet

What you eat directly affects how you feel. In Ayurveda, a Sattvic diet is recommended for mental clarity and calmness.

  • Avoid: Excessively spicy, oily, or packaged foods, which can cause acidity and irritability.
  • Include: Fresh fruits, leafy green vegetables, nuts (like soaked almonds), and dairy.
  • Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can trigger headaches and anxiety. Drink plenty of water, fresh coconut water, or buttermilk (chaas) to keep your body cool.

4. Prioritize Rest and Sleep

In our busy Indian households, women often put everyone else’s needs first. Now is the time to prioritize you.

  • Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep every night.
  • Take a short 20-minute “power nap” in the afternoon if possible.
  • Sleeping on your left side improves blood flow to the placenta and can help you sleep better.

5. Try Traditional Oil Massage (Abhyanga)

A gentle massage can work wonders for tired muscles and a stressed mind.

  • Ask a family member or a professional therapist for a gentle foot massage or head massage (Champi) using warm coconut or sesame oil.
  • This improves blood circulation and helps you sleep deeper.

6. Communicate with Your Partner and Family

In India, pregnancy is often a family affair. Use this support system!

  • If you are worried about labor pain, finances, or baby care, do not bottle it up. Talk to your husband or your mother.
  • Sharing your fears often makes them feel much smaller.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask for help with household chores.

7. Limit Screen Time and Information Overload

We all love Google, but constantly searching for “pregnancy symptoms” can lead to unnecessary anxiety.

  • Stop reading negative birth stories online.
  • Limit your time on social media if it makes you feel overwhelmed.
  • Trust your doctor at Ferty9 for medical advice rather than the internet.
