Why Is My Period Late?
A late period is usually caused by one of these common reasons:
- Pregnancy – take a home test to rule this out first
- Stress – disrupts the hormones that control your cycle
- Weight changes – rapid gain or loss affects ovulation
- Excessive exercise – suppresses reproductive hormones
- Illness – even a cold or flu can delay your cycle
- Thyroid issues – both hypo and hyperthyroidism affect hormonal regulation
- PCOS – a common hormonal condition causing irregular periods
- Birth control changes – starting or stopping hormonal contraception
- Perimenopause – common in women in their late 30s–40s
A period is considered late after 5+ days past your expected date. See a doctor if it’s been over 2 weeks or if missed periods are recurring.
