Can Fallopian Tubes Cause Miscarriage?

Conceiving couples are concerned with infertility treatment for males as well as an infertility treatment for females, as naturally, both partners need to be checked for not being able to bear a child.

Fallopian tubes happen to be the reproductive organs in women that are thin types of tubes present on either side of the uterus. The fallopian tube does carry the egg produced during ovulation to one’s uterus. If the fertilization of the egg does occur with the sperm, the fertilized egg also does travel via the fallopian tube to one’s uterus for implantation. If the fallopian tube does get blocked, the path for sperm to travel toward the egg also tends to get blocked. This is referred to as tubal factor infertility and it does affect pregnancy. Infertility treatment for females does highlight these facts.

Signs of Blocked Fallopian Tubes

Usually, blocked fallopian tubes have no symptoms. Women are not aware that their fallopian tubes are blocked unless they do try for conceiving and also fail. Signs of this health issue are based on their causes.

Common signs of blocked fallopian tubes:

  • Pain on a particular side of the stomach
  • Severe pelvic pain occurs in severe cases
  • The foul smell of one’s vaginal discharge
  • Pain during sex
  • High fever

If the patient has a high fever as well as severe pain, then it is better to consider visiting a doctor immediately as it can be life-threatening.

Causes Blockage of Fallopian Tubes

Fallopian tubes do get blocked due to the scar tissue as well as pelvic adhesions caused by the following conditions:

  • A pelvic inflammatory disease that does cause scarring
  • Endometriosis does cause blockage in the fallopian tube on account of the build-up of endometrial tissue in one’s fallopian tube
  • Sexually transmitted infections like Chlamydia and gonorrhea. These cause scarring
  • The growth of fibroids can lead to blockage of the fallopian tubes
  • Previous surgery on one’s fallopian tubes caused pelvic adhesions

Can Fallopian Tubes Cause Miscarriage?

Blocked Fallopian Tubes Causing Miscarriages

The uterus, as well as ovaries, happened to be linked to each other via fallopian tubes and thus conception takes place in the fallopian tube. Blocked fallopian tubes are considered to be the most common cause of infertility in women. If the tube does get blocked due to any reason, the sperm, as well as the egg, cannot meet at the fallopian tube, thus causing infertility.

If both the fallopian tubes get blocked, treatment is required to become pregnant. In case the fallopian tube is partially blocked, then also the woman can become pregnant but this can lead to ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy tends to make the fertilized egg develop inside the fallopian tube only. If only one fallopian tube gets blocked, the egg can travel to the woman’s uterus via the unaffected fallopian tube and fertility can take place. The use of fertilization medications can also help increase the chances of ovulation.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Blocked Fallopian Tubes

An x-ray called Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is rather performed to view the fallopian tube for any sort of blockages. The HSG does require inserting dye into one’s uterus and fallopian tube to know about the location as well as the extent of the blockage. The HSG is performed in the first half of the woman’s menstrual cycle.

Laparoscopy can be used if the HSG does not solve the problem. If possible, the doctor will try to sort out the blockage if any. With the help of laparoscopy, small blockages can indeed be removed. In case the blockages are large, they cannot be removed.

If the blockage of the fallopian tube is due to damage to a part of the fallopian tube, the doctor will remove the damaged part via surgery. Then of course the healthy parts will be connected. If the blockages cannot be treated, the doctor may suggest assisted reproductive methods like IVF (in vitro fertilization) that do not require fallopian tubes.

Not merely the woman faces problem but infertility treatment for male is also an issue that does matter to couples apart from infertility treatment for female.
